About the Event
Capture the beauty of Noordhoek Beach sunset and the magic of the night time in this unique workshop with local photographer and lecturer, Garyth Bevan. Garyth is a Visual Communicator and Photography lecturer at the Stellenbosch Academy.
Dates will be either 28, 29 or 30 June depending on which is the clearer evening. You will be added to a WhatsApp group upon receiving your RSVP to coordinate details. Payment link will be sent 48 hours prior to the workshop.
This course is for beginners and intermediate photographers who want to capture the essence of the night sky. Having some prior knowledge of photography basics will be helpful but is not necessary as we will touch on those topics.
Your own camera, tripod and a couple of accessories are required. Please follow the booking link for more information.

PROPOSED SCHEDULE (Sunset 17.45)
16.30: Meet at the DIY Craft Bar for class on the following:
- Moon and Tides - finding the best time of the year and location
- Landscape Photography - using slow shutter speeds to blur any water movement in the image.
- Light Painting Techniques – equipment and methods
- Star Trails – equipment and methods - freezing the stars using short exposures & creating long star trails using long exposures.
- Combining star trail and lighting painting photography in one image.
17.30: Leave for the rocks on Noordhoek Beach
18.00: Set up cameras for Landscape Photography with long exposure times
18.30: Light painting
19.30: Star trail and combining.
20.30: Finish up and head back to carpark.
WHAT TO BRING EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING WISE:
- Spare batteries for your camera and flash (if bringing a flash.)
- Camera equipment: body and wide-angle lens, anything from 15mm – 35mm lens
- Good Tripod for long exposures.
- Remote/cable release for digital camera for long exposures. (you need this to take exposures longer than 30 seconds.)
- Tape to tape down shutter button for long exposures. (old school method should you not have a remote cable.)
- Thick elastic bands and wine corks. (at least 3 corks, this is for keeping your shutter button open if you do not have a cable release and will be explained in class before shooting starts.)
- A5 black piece of card. (for blocking the lens while changing your light source.)
- Camera cleaning kit. (cloth for cleaning lens if very misty or windy on the night.)
- Large torch, strong beam and spare batteries
- Small torch or head lamp. (a must head torch.)
- Flash or fluorescent light
- Beanie and warm jackets for night time
- Camping chair
- Good shoes, thick socks
- Wind breaker Warm jersey/JACKET
- Refreshments and snacks or Flask (optional for tea, coffee, soup, Old Brown Sherry, wine etc.)
